Advancing the Common Good

United Way of the Greenbrier Valley’s goals for Advancing the Common Good  focus on three critical areas of Education, Income and Health.

EDUCATION is essential to getting and keeping a job with a livable wage and health benefits.

An INCOME adequate to pay for today's necessities and save for the future provides families some sense of financial stability.

Access to quality HEALTH care keeps children on track in school and adults productive at work.

Remove any one of these building blocks and the other two topple.

Here's how your gifts to United Way have been allocated in 2009 to Advance the Common Good.

SEDUCATION- 27%

Helping children and youth achieve their potential through education by:

- Improving access to quality, affordable child care and early learning opportunities

- Partnering with schools and parents to improve graduation rates

- Providing after school and mentoring programs for at-risk youth

s INCOME - 42%

Helping families become financially stable and independent by:

- Supporting basic needs while increasing financial education

- Helping hard working people obtain job training and family-sustaining wages

- Increasing affordable housing for seniors and families

s HEALTH - 27%

Improving people's health by:

- Increasing access to critical healthcare services

- Reducing substance abuse, child abuse and domestic violence

- Increasing health education and preventive care.

s OTHER - 4%

-Support to area non-profits as designated by donors.

2010 Allocations

The Allocations Committee spent two full days in February meeting with agency representatives to determine funding for program service goals. Their recommend-ations were presented to the United Way board of trustees on March 4, 2010. Partner agencies and United Way initiatives will begin receiving funding April 2010. Representatives from Greenbrier, Monroe and Pocahontas counties sit on the Allocations Committee.
