MeadWestvaco Sponsors 2009 Campaign Coordinators Breakfast.

Twenty representatives from area companies gathered together on September 23rd for the 7th annual Campaign Coordinator’s Breakfast sponsored by MeadWestvaco. Not deterred by an aggressive campaign goal of $300,000, coordinator’s shared best practices and learned ways to enhance their internal employee campaigns. Tools and resources were made available through the Campaign Center on United Way’s web site, www.unitedwaygreenbrier.org.

“Gifts from companies and company employees represent one-half of our total campaign”, says Susan Hewman, President of United Way of the Greenbrier Valley. “The annual breakfast gives us an opportunity to recognize and thank the company coordinators for their commitment and dedication in spearheading their internal campaigns. Their success is our success, and we want to do everything we can to help them.”

Gifts to United Way will be used to support to programs and services of thirty-two partner agencies in addition to our Warming Hands and Hearts and Born Learning initiatives. Warming Hands and Hearts is a home heating emergency assistance program. Since its inception November 2005, 1,372 families (2,081 adults and 1,417 children) have been helped and United Way has invested $75,000 into the program. “During these economically challenging times, we know the need this year will be greater than ever”, says Hewman. “We are committed to the initiative and to our partner agencies who serve so many in need.”

We Need You NOW More Than Ever . . .

With the current state of our economy, families are struggling to meet mortgage and rental obligations and feed their families.  We live in challenging times affecting so many in the Greenbrier Valley.

Over the past three years, our Warming Hands & Hearts Coalition has assisted 1,204 families (1,814 adults and 1,222 children) in Pocahontas, Greenbrier and Monroe Counties with the high cost of home heating. Your United Way alone has invested $79,522 in this initiative. The coalitions in each county continue to see an increase in requests for help. We need to take care of our families in need!

The Senior Center in Pocahontas County has seen the number of home delivered meals increase by 57% over the past two years, and the number of meals served in the center has increased by 18%. We need to take care of our older citizens!

United Way sits on the Emergency Food and Shelter boards in Greenbrier, Monroe and Pocahontas counties. National EFS dollars for each county are inadequate to meet the needs of food banks throughout the Valley. Food bank assistance has risen by 20% nationally. Here in Greenbrier County alone, over 850 families are being served, and that number is growing every day. We need to make sure our families are fed!

Thirty-two local agencies in Green-brier, Monroe, and Pocahontas Counties depend on United Way funding to supplement programs and services for those in need. With all that is upon us, the number of clients increases daily, whether women and children suffering from domestic violence, at-risk students needing tutoring services, or low-income working families needing an extra boost to pay the utility bill.

With your help, we can focus on the greatest needs and make an impact right here at home in the Greenbrier Valley.

2009 Campaign Co-Chairs are ready for the challenge!

The 2009 campaign is in high gear and we need your help! The challenges of our national economy these past twelve months have had major impact on everyone. The demand on social services, both public and private, from struggling families in our Valley

is huge. The United Way is ramping up fundraising activities in anticipation of this growing need. Those of us who choose to live and work here know how important our Valley is to all of us, and how important the United Way is to the Greenbrier Valley.

United Way of the Greenbrier Valley has an ambitious goal of $300,000. Your gift will support thirty-two partner agencies that help remove barriers for those in our Valley who need help plus United Way initiatives focusing on health, income and education.

Ann and I are appreciative of the Warming Hands & Hearts initiative. In 2008, United Way funded 46% of this program that impacted 362 families and nearly 1,000 people! In the past 3 years, UW has invested $79,522 to this project. We are personally troubled that children and seniors in our Valley fear going to sleep at night lacking resources for adequate heat. Winter is fast approaching. Here, we can make an immediate difference.

The United Way of the Greenbrier Valley is a vital conduit helping the lives of many touched by partner agencies and initiatives. The United Way helps us all - supporters

and recipients. You too can be a vital part of United Way. Our contributions are truly investments in a healthy community. And remember, 99 cents out of every dollar stays right here locally. Since 1986, our United Way has invested over $2.2 million in the Greenbrier Valley.

We thank you for your willingness to help make the Greenbrier Valley a better place. Every dollar is so important.

a2009 Valley Leader reception was hosted by John & Vicki Wilson.

The weather cooperated and the views were spectacular for the 2009 United Way Valley Leader Reception held September 17th at the home of John and Vicki Wilson. A crowd of seventy plus major donors mingled throughout the evening and enjoyed the sumptuous food.  Campaign Co-Chairs Rick and Ann McClung took a moment to thank everyone for their generous support of United Way and reminded them that their gifts help fund programs and services of thirty-two agencies and Warming Hands & Hearts, a home heating emergency assistance program.

“Valley Leaders contribute $500 or more to the United Way and make up thirty percent of our total campaign dollars”, says United Way board president Susan Hewman. “And that percentage continues to grow every year. With the economic challenges we face in this years’ campaign, their support is more important than ever. The needs in our community are great and it’s at times like this that we all need to come together to help our neighbors. Since it’s inception in November 2005, United Way alone has provided over $75,000 towards the Warming Hands & Hearts emergency home heating program, and it’s one we need to continue to fund.  We are grateful to our Valley Leaders and recognize their commitment to our community and the entire Greenbrier Valley.”
