The partnership between United Way and WVSOM students for Day of Caring came about when members of the WVSOM TOUCH Committee approached United Way and offered to volunteer for the event. United Way has held a Day of Caring for several years now, but it has always been low key. We are thrilled to be able to partner with the students at WVSOM in making the Day of Caring a true community event.
The WVSOM TOUCH program was set up by the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents to encourage all osteopathic medical students to become more involved in community service. The acronym TOUCH stands for “Translating Osteopathic Understanding into Community Health.”
United Way and the TOUCH Committee worked with local organizations, including Southeast Appalachian Rural Alliance (SARA), to line up projects for the day. SARA site supervisors made sure each site was fully equipped with all the necessary tools to get the job done.
United Way hopes to continue the partnership with the TOUCH Committee and grow the event in the years to come.
