United For Alice

Who is Alice?

For a growing number of U.S. households, financial stability remains out of reach, no matter how hard people work. These households are known as ALICE: Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. They earn above the Federal Poverty Level but still struggle to afford basic necessities.

ALICE households:

  • Span all races, ages, and backgrounds, though households of color are disproportionately affected

  • Include workers whose wages have not kept up with the rising cost of living, often working multiple jobs or balancing caregiving responsibilities

  • Live paycheck to paycheck and face constant tradeoffs, such as paying rent or buying food, covering medical care or child care, paying utility bills or affording gas

ALICE households are part of every community. They are our health care workers, teachers, retail employees, sanitation workers, and others who keep our communities running. ALICE may be someone you know or someone you love, or it may even be you.

Who We Serve

United for ALICE supports individuals and families in Greenbrier, Monroe and Pocahontas Counties who fall into the ALICE category. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed — people who are working, often in essential roles, yet still cannot meet their basic household budget. Eligibility is based on local ALICE Survival Budget thresholds for each county and household size.

Community Assistance Fund

Purpose

The Community Assistance Fund provides immediate, rapid-response financial support for anyone experiencing a short-term crisis. When a person suddenly can’t cover a critical utility bill, this program steps in quickly to keep essential services connected. The fund helps stabilize individuals and households before a small emergency becomes a larger hardship. This is a complimentary service to our 211 referral program.

Who We Serve

The Community Assistance Fund is open to any individual or household in our region facing an urgent need that puts their water, electricity, gas, or other essential utilities at risk.
