History of the United Way of Greenbrier Valley

United Way of the Greenbrier Valley strengthens Pocahontas, Monroe, and Greenbrier counties by supporting the people and programs doing boots on the ground work and strategically investing in solutions that improve lives. We unite people and organizations to advance education, financial stability, and health, empowering individuals, uplifting families, and creating a stronger, more resilient community across the Greenbrier Valley.
Our
Story
In 1986, the Greenbrier County Committee on Aging sought funding from United Way in Charleston due to state and federal cutbacks threatening services for senior citizens. While funding was denied, they were advised to form a local United Way, an idea that quickly gained support through the Greenbrier Valley Interagency Council. With guidance from United Way of America and West Virginia United Way “Circuit Rider” Jim Thibeault, the United Way of Greenbrier Valley was formally established, with its bylaws reserving a board seat for the Interagency Council president.
The organization launched during a period of national celebration, as United Way of America marked its 100th anniversary in 1986, having been founded in 1886. A major event tied to the West Virginia State Fair and John Denver’s involvement highlighted both the centennial and the birth of the United Way of Greenbrier Valley, earning it recognition as “the first United Way in the second century.” Following the celebration, the new organization conducted its first campaign with a $60,000 goal but raised only $8,000, reflecting its early challenges as a volunteer-led organization with limited public awareness.
Despite the slow start, the United Way of Greenbrier Valley steadily grew. After seven years operating entirely with volunteers, the organization hired its first executive director in 1993, bringing on longtime volunteer Gene Meyers. This marked a turning point by providing consistent leadership and daily management, and Meyers served in this role for six years, helping to stabilize and expand the organization.
